The art of Tae Kwon-do oringinated from South Korea in 57 BC over 2000 years ago, the art was used as a form of military combat as well as peasants and in monasteries. In 1910 Japan successfully invaded Korea and ruled until the end of World War 2. Whilst the Japanese ruled they wanted to eradicate all Korean culture including Tae Kwon-Do and therefore taught the Korean people what is now known as Karate.
However some of the monasteries continued to practice Tae Kwon-Do to keep the art form alive. When the Japanese left Korea the monasteries attempted to teach the Korean's Tae Kwon-Do although some moves were altered in their teachings as a result of the Japanese influence. Therefore Karate and Tae Kwon-Do appear vey similar.
The words "Tae Kwon-Do" literally translate in to Foot Hand Way of Art. Tae Kwon-Do is a self defence that relies heavily on the person's hands and feet being used to protect themselves and counter attack their opponents.
Through regular training of Tae Kwon-Do, you will learn many blocks, kicks, strikes and combinations of movements. The class also offers self defence in the form of locks and throws, to deter opponents in real life.
Due to this art being traditional, there are patterns in Tae Kwon-Do that a student must learn to achieve a higher belt. There are 10 belts starting from White to Black.
Tae Kwon-Do also offers sparring. Being a part of the Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain (TAGB), Nicole's TKD School can offer sparring competitions both nationally and internationally.
For those students who achieve a high grade, i.e. Black Belt, there is also the opportunity to break boards, known as destruction, as well as practice using weaponry such as num-chuks, staffs and samuarai swords.
Seriously though, TKD is about keeping fit, meeting like minded people who want to learn how to defend themselves whilst having fun and learning something that could save their lives.
